Obama Speaks on Lehman's Collapse Anniversary: Latest Timetable for Congressional Reform

Yesterday, President Obama was also stern as he delivered a speech near Wall Street in which he talked about the need for financial reform. As noted in this NY Times article, the window for true reform is quickly closing as the stock market climbs every day. Below is an excerpt from that article about the possible timeline for Congress taking legislative action:

"Senior Congressional Democrats had originally planned to have the House complete its work on the financial overhaul before turning to the more recalcitrant Senate. But the tighter time schedule has forced lawmakers to rethink that approach.

Later this week, Barney Frank, Democrat of Massachusetts and the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, is expected to announce a series of hearings for the coming days before his committee marks up legislation in October. Aides say he is hoping to get legislation to the floor by the end of next month or beginning of November.

There is less certainty in the Senate, where Christopher J. Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut and the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, has been working to put together a package that could withstand the threat of a filibuster."

Woman in hospital after motorcycle, car collide

“A woman was flown to a local hospital Wednesday morning with serious injuries after her motorcycle collided with a car on the Glendale Avenue on-ramp to the Loop 101.

Initial reports indicated the woman might be an off-duty Valley police officer, but Glendale Fire Department spokesman Daniel Valenzuela said he wasn't able to confirm that.

The woman, who was dressed in civilian clothing, did not appear to be wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, Valenzuela said.

The driver of the car was not injured in the accident. Officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety were on-scene investigating the collision, which occurred at about 8:30 a.m.

"Whether you're on a motorcycle or in a car, it's a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and practice defensive driving skills," Valenzuela said.” (Meghan Moravcik Walber).

Shots fired at Phoenix after-prom party

“Police broke up an after-prom party in South Phoenix Sunday morning after receiving reports of gunshots being fired at the home.

Officers did not find the weapon or anyone who may have fired the shots, but said they made multiple arrests for possession of alcohol by a minor, providing alcohol to minors and curfew violations.

The party was likely put on by a party crew - groups of teens who put on parties or take over smaller ones and charge a cover for party-goers. That group is being investigated, said Lt. Mike Rivera. Police arrived at about 1 a.m. and held 66 people inside the house as they investigated the incident and eventually issued arrests and citations.

The homeowner of the house on the 6200 block of 52nd Lane, a woman in her early 30s, was cited for providing alcohol to minors, though police said she claimed she didn't know the party was going on.

Rivera did not know what school's prom the party-goers had attended that night,”(Megan Boehnk).

Man shot in buttocks while leaving girlfriend's apartment

“27-year-old man was shot in the buttocks early Friday morning as he was leaving his girlfriend's Chandler apartment, and police suspect the gunman was the woman's estranged husband.

The victim told police he was walking to his car when he saw a male approach with a gun and start yelling at him, said Det. Frank Mendoza of the Chandler police department.

The victim attempted to run away but was shot in the buttocks, police said.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries. It is uncertain how many times the man was shot.

The gunman was wearing all black, Mendoza said. Police are seeking the ex-husband for questioning.

The shooting, which took place in the 3100 block of N. Price Road, occurred at 2:45 a.m. early Friday.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Chandler Police Department at 480-782-4130,” (Eric Smith).
